Cummins X15N and RNG Continue to Gain Momentum

‍ ‍

Industry Insight:
A recent industry report highlighted continued growth in renewable natural gas (RNG) adoption for medium- and heavy-duty fleets. According to the 2026 State of Sustainable Fleets report, a growing share of natural gas vehicles are operating on RNG, while early adopters of the new Cummins X15N natural gas engine reported meaningful operating cost savings compared to diesel. The report also found strong adoption within refuse and return-to-base fleet applications.

Mcore Perspective

For many fleets, the question is no longer whether natural gas works — it’s whether the economics work for their specific operation. In our experience, centralized fleets with predictable fueling patterns (municipal, refuse, transit, school districts, utility fleets, and private return-to-base operations) often see the strongest case for CNG/RNG infrastructure. Factors such as annual fuel consumption, station sizing, compressor selection, utility costs, and available grants can materially impact ROI.
